I almost am starting to as well. It is ridiculous the type of backwards thinking that dominates the lives of all too many people who I presume to share a faith with.
Recently a school I am connected to (not through former attendance, but via family employment) displayed a painting of Wiz Khalifa done by a senior at the school. It won an award at a regional Christian school conference, and the art teacher thought it deserved to be recognized as an outstanding work. After several weeks, another teacher saw the painting and thought that the tattoos and piercings adorning the (black) figure in the painting were not appropriate. This teacher decided to confront the art teacher in the hallway about it, with students around and everything. Other teachers and administrative staff got involved, taking it all the way to the head administrator, expressing their moral indignation over a painting that, at face value, contains nothing offensive in a Christian environment.
Instead of celebrating the artistic talent of a student, and encouraging her in her future endeavors, some members of the school seek to moralize and be, what I call, Pharisees about the issue.
There are those, though, who are fighting against these “Pharisees” including board members and the head administrator. I am proud to say that these people are being Christ, rather than the Christian Gandhi comments on.
When we broaden our perspectives, rather than remain narrow minded, I think we come closer to the reality of being Christ-like.
